A New Legacy for the Bay of Plenty
Built by local company Legacy Marine for the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Harbourmaster team, Te Kauika was launched in July this year. The 10m aluminium vessel represents a modern design, tailored to the diverse needs of the region’s maritime operations. The naming of Te Kauika, means “pathway of the whales”. Its purpose and functions will include patrols from Eastern Bay Whakatane, through to Waihau Bay, focusing on clearing navigational hazards and maintaining navigational markers, and support flood responses and oil spills.
Te Kauika is part of an expanded habourmaster’s fleet located throughout the region to meet diverse maritime needs. The vessel was designed by LOMOcean Naval Architect and Yacht Design, and built by Legacy Marine after consulting with the Regional Council on their specific requirements.
With over 25 years’ experience in the industry, Glenn Shaw and family established Legacy Marine and the award-winning trailer boat manufacturer Extreme Boats, with a base right here in Whakatane.
