Our Board of Directors has the important role of ensuring that the strategic goals of the marine project of delivering long term sustainable economic outcomes for the town and region are realised.  

  • John Rae - Chair

    John has a broad range of management and directorial experience within a variety of business sectors including banking, investment, venture capital, technology, infrastructure, construction, energy, waste and engineering. He has had wide-ranging geographic experience with management and governance responsibility for operations in New Zealand, Australia, Asia and Europe.

    John has degrees in Commerce and Law from Auckland University and is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors.

    John is also a Director or Chairman of a number of other boards .

  • Shaneen Simpson-Almond

    Shaneen is an experienced public servant and regional senior advisor and a skilled and experienced project manager, with a passion for the development of land, communities, and people. Shaneen has experience as governor and company director in education, health, hotel management, road engineering, fisheries, dairy farming, horticulture, and boat harbour development.

  • Elena Trout

    Elena is a professional civil engineer and is a Distinguished Fellow and Past President of Engineering NZ. She has significant experience in the development and delivery large projects in the transport, infrastructure and energy sectors and acts as an advisor to both central and local government on a variety of engineering projects.

    Elena currently holds directorships with Contact Energy Ltd, Citycare Ltd and is on the Defence Capability Governance Board. She is also one of the independent directors of the Ngāpuhi Asset Holdings Company. She is the Chair of Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority and Deputy Chair of Ara Ake Ltd and Co-Chair of the Construction Infrastructure Workforce Development Council, Waihanga Ara Rau.

  • Tyrone Newson

    Tyrone Newson Ngati Awa Group Holdings Ltd Chief Executive Officer: MBA (Hons), BE Civil, CPEng PMP, Ngāti Kahu, Te Rarawa

    Prior to Mr Newson’s appointment as CEO of Ngati Awa Group Holdings Ltd, he in his capacity as a director at Te Kuaka, he provided project management services overseeing the construction of a 14 chair renal unit for Tauranga Hospital, after his 5 year stint as a Development Manager for Kiwi Property developing Sylvia Park Shopping Centre.

    For much of his early career, Mr Newson was based in Singapore and then in Malaysia taking on roles with international companies Beca, McConnell Dowell and Ikea Malaysia. He was the Chief Executive and then a Board member for Te Puna Topu o Hokianga Trust and has served as a chairman for the Ritimana Kohanga Reo.

    In 2007, he was named Young Engineer of the Year by the Institute of Professional Engineers New Zealand.
