Taiao – Environment
Utilising best practice solutions with regards to marina and boatyard operations, Te Rāhui will provide long term, holistic benefits for land and sea.
Te Rāhui’s design enables improved environmental outcomes, including:
Sea walls seeded with carefully selected native species will provide water filtration, assisting the return of a natural ecological balance and abundant biodiversity.
The restoration of restored wetland adjacent to the river.
Sophisticated man made and natural stormwater treatment systems will improve discharges from run off, and boat maintenance activities.
The riverside berths currently used by our fleet of commercial vessels will be removed. Removing these vessels will improve and restore river flow.
Vessels relocated to the boat harbour will also have access to in-berth sewage disposal – almost eliminating the need to dump at sea. Recycled water will be used for washing down boats.
A sub-project associated with the Boat Harbour is the removal of contamination of land adjacent to the site, following historic dumping of wood waste. During construction, earth works will be re-used.
The project design considered and acknowledged the dynamic river environment along with sea level rise and global warming impacts.
“The project has empowered us as Kaitiaki to utilise our whenua in a way that respects and protects the dynamic river environment and provides employment and training for our owners and Ngāti Awa.”
